Gold Jewelry

Gold was among the first metals to be mined because it commonly occurs in its native pure form. Ancient artisans lavishly used gold to decorate tombs and temples, as well as fashion great art items.  Of particular note are the gold items discovered by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon in 1922 in the tomb of Tutankhamun, who ruled Egypt in the 14th century B.C. Incorporation of gemstones into gold works occured almost from the beginning.

Pure (100%- 24Kt) gold is too soft, and it is usually mixed with other metals (making gold alloys) to make it stronger and more usable for jewelry.

The unit -Karat - indicates the amount of pure gold in the metal. The higher the percentage of pure gold the higher the karat designation.

There are a few factors that determine the value of a gold jewelry piece:

  1. weight - gold jewelry is commonly sold based on weight in grams(gr) or pennyweights(pwt).  The heavier the piece, the higher the gold content and therefore the greater expense
  2. design - designer jewelry is more expensive, especially if it is a unique or custom design piece.
  3. finish - special finishes to the metal such as matte, or hammered finish add to the cost of the gold jewelry piece.

You could take good care of your gold jewelry by following a few simple steps :

  1. Avoid contact with soap, perfume, cosmetics and hairsprays.
  2. Take chains and bracelets off at night, store chains flat, to prevent   them from breaking.
  3. Use soft cloth to polish gold jewelry and remove skin oils.
